Dancing brings out the inner child in older adults. Moving to music, spending time with friends, and getting out of the house are just a few of the things that make dancing so beneficial. As seniors step to the beat of the music, they can enjoy, have a social life and a routine which allows them to step out of their homes, join a community and feel a sense of belonging.
Here are a few premier institutes that we have worked with:
National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad
Riverside School, Ahmedabad
NIDO International School, Sangamner
Film and Television Institute, Pune
TanzTangente, Berlin
Most educational institutes treat dance as a once-a-year
activity that concludes with performances in the organisation’s “Annual Day” of sorts. Avartan attempts to take these institutes beyond the annual day phenomenon. Long- and short-term courses create real-life skills and are experiential in nature.
We believe a change in attitude towards dance at educational institutes will
create better citizens for tomorrow. We take every opportunity to develop
communities with this ideology in mind. Of course, there is resistance because the result is not immediately tangible. This resistance has brought more energy our efforts.
The courses are tailor-made to suit the activities agreed upon with each educational institute. The tasks are built to give the participants experiential learning. At the same
time, it is a dynamic based on
discussions and participants sharing their thoughts and experiences. The efforts have borne fruit in some of the institutes.
A few short-term programmes facilitated regularly are:
Artist in Residence, Riverside School, 10-day programme.
Open Elective National Institute of Design, Paldi, 7-day programme.
Unmask, a 1-day workshop to know yourself better.
4-day movement workshops
A few long-term programmes offered are:
Setting up a Studio, Arts Curriculum, A 1-year programme.
Movement workshop for actors, Film and Television Institute of India, 6- month programme.
This programme also includes classes in underprivileged communities. The success of
this activity is evident in the development of Avartan’s other programme, “Creating Facilitators Programme”.
